Definition of access_method

 

Access Method - The machine code subroutines that provide physical block level access to I/O devices. High level language commands and Assembler macros provide the calls to the routines. The routines handle creation of channel commands and management of buffers.
There are several classes of these routines based on the I/O device type and method of data access. For most vintage IBM operating systems they are limited to:


BTAM Basic Telecommunications Access Method
VTAM Virtual Telecommunications Access Method

BDAM Basic Direct Access Method
BPAM Basic Paritioned Access Method
BSAM Basic Sequential Access Method
ISAM Indexed Sequential Access Method
VSAM Virtual Storage Access Method
