Definition of block

This is a unit of I/O data that can be transfered to or from a device which frequently contains more than one logical record. There are inter-record gaps between the blocks on the media. A tape may have blocks of 800 bytes divided into 80 byte records (Punch Card Images) with gaps between the blocks to give the drive time to speed up and stop.
